Kelsey Mitchell wins gold for Canada in women’s track cycling sprint – National

Kelsey Mitchell has won another gold medal for Canada after finishing first in the women’s sprint finals in track cycling.

Mitchell, 27, nabbed Canada its 24th medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics — the most won at a non-boycotted Summer Olympics. The first place finish also marks Canada’s seventh gold medal overall in Tokyo.

Coming from Sherwood, Park., Alta., Mitchell’s win also marks the Canada’s final medal in the Olympics.

Mitchell previously won sprint gold at the 2019 Pan American Games, and set a world record in the women’s flying 200-metre sprint during the Pan American track cycling championship that same year.

Ukraine’s Olena Starikova came in second to win silver, after Mitchell beat her out in two back to back heats to capture the title. Hong Kong’s Lee Wai Sze took home the bronze.
