Officers say a U.S. Navy commander has been fired from his job as the chief officer of a warship as a result of he refused to get a COVID-19 vaccine as required and refused to be examined for the virus.

Cmdr. Lucian Kins was relieved of his duties Friday as second in charge of the USS Winston Churchill, a destroyer, by Navy Capt. Ken Anderson, commander of the destroyer squadron.

Officers say Kins was the primary naval officer to be fired on account of a vaccine refusal.

Officers spoke on situation of anonymity to debate personnel points.

The Pentagon has made the vaccine necessary for all service members.
