The Dutch term “polder” refers to a low-lying tract of land reclaimed from the sea enclosed by a wall or dike to protect the land from the sea.
As the new man-made land is below sea level, water levels in the polder are controlled by a comprehensive water management system which comprises a network of drains and pumps to keep the land dry.
