GENEVA – The summer solstice on June 21 marks the longest day and shortest night of the year in the northern hemisphere. It is also the symbolic start of the summer months.
In Europe, the day has a spiritual dimension because of its association with St John the Baptist, whose birth on June 24 fell close to the summer solstice. Pagan rituals are also performed that day.
