SINGAPORE – Thermal coal prices have risen to a multi-year high, spurring miners to raise production of the fossil fuel even as many are taking steps to diversify into renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions over the longer term.
Prices are being lifted by strong Chinese demand for electricity over an extra hot summer and a bottleneck in supply following a trade spat between China and Australia, a major exporter of thermal coal.
