LOS ANGELES – The Hand Of God, director Paolo Sorrentino’s bittersweet coming-of-age story, was impressed by a horrific tragedy he suffered as a boy – and which he escaped due to his obsession with footballer Diego Maradona.

When Sorrentino was 17 and dwelling in Naples, Italy, his dad and mom died from carbon monoxide poisoning of their vacation house.
